About REMI
In 1970, REMI founder and owner Mark Stevenson first came to Columbia to attend the University of Missouri-Columbia. He had an extremely difficult time finding housing that was close to downtown, and even then, he found it a challenge to consistently find a place to park. He bought a trailer at Valley Trailer Court at the end of Ashland Road, and then later bought a house on Windsor. Over the course of the next 10 years he discovered that he thoroughly enjoyed working on houses, fixing them up and then renting or selling them, and the real estate agents in town loved selling him their “fixer-upper” properties.
In its earliest form, the company we know today as REMI started as Stevenson’s Apartments, and then later evolved into Apartment Management.
In 1980, a financial advisor with SCORE looked at Stevenson’s business model and suggested he expand out into dealing with commercial properties, and at this point Real Estate Management, Inc. was born.
After Mark completed his Bachelor’s degree, he went on to study law at MU, while continuing to manage, renovate, rent and sell properties around town.
Stevenson is a huge fan of Columbia and has always been an active and engaged member of the community - he spent 10 years as an active member of the Columbia Bicycle Commission as well as 15 years on the Community Garden Coalition. He promotes a sustainable and environmentally conscious approach to caring for his properties, and his “Green” philosophy is reflected in the training he provides his friendly and expert staff as well as in all the properties that REMI rents or sells. It remains a foremost priority that each of REMI’s residents is comfortable and in a beneficial living arrangement.
REMI currently owns, manages and rents out approximately 500 units, in addition to some commercial property rentals and sales. REMI takes pride in the fact that each of their properties is very unique with a “personality” all its own.
